The School of Aviation was established in 1987 to meet airline needs for graduates with a wide industry perspective. Massey University were the first New Zealand training organisation to meet the regulations for Civil Aviation Authority Rule Part 141 certification.
Undergraduate qualifications enable you to train to become a pilot or to study towards a career in aviation management. You can study in New Zealand or as a distance learning (aviation management) student at the Singapore Aviation Academy.
Senior aviation managers are required to demonstrate not only technical knowledge and expertise, but also postgraduate aviation qualifications and skills. Massey University’s postgraduate qualifications can give you those skills.
Accreditation and rankings
The Bachelor of Aviation programme at Massey is ISO-9001-2015 certified and holds the unique distinction of holding an Equivalence Approval from the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority.
The School of Aviation is an Air NZ Preferred Flight Training Organisation. After a rigorous selection process Air New Zealand chose four Preferred FTOs (PFTO) to provide airline-informed ab-initio flight training. Massey University is the only PFTO provider offering an integrated aviation degree.
The Royal Aeronautical Society is the world’s only professional body dedicated to the aerospace community. The group accredit all aviation programmes at Massey University, underlining that they meet the RAeS’s international professional standards.
Massey University School of Aviation offers the Bachelor of Aviation Management and Master of Aviation via distance learning to international students enrolled via the Massey-Singapore Aviation Academy partnership.
Undergraduate programmes
Bachelor of Aviation
Massey’s Bachelor of Aviation (Air Transport Pilot) is a university undergraduate qualification intended for career pilots. It will not just train you to be a competent pilot, but to become a ‘flight deck manager’ with a university education, and an in-depth understanding of the aviation industry.
Massey owns and operates a fleet of technically advanced Diamond single engine and twin engine aircraft equipped with full digital avionics approved for Performance Based Navigation operations.
You’ll also get to learn in our state-of-the-art flight Diamond DA-42 flight simulator. With a 220-degree wraparound screen, it can be positioned at any airport in the world and the scenery outside will match the location. Massey University’s School of Aviation was the first pilot training facility in New Zealand to install this new-generation simulator.
Career
If you study the Bachelor of Aviation (Air Transport Pilot), your preferred career will no doubt be as an airline pilot. Gaining this degree will also open other doors for other potential careers within the aviation industry.
Bachelor of Aviation Management
he Bachelor of Aviation Management (BAvMan) is a dedicated aviation qualification which will introduce you various aspects of the exciting aviation industry. If you have a passion for aviation, you enjoy working with other people, you are interested in working towards a management role in a global business, then this degree is for you.
You will gain an understanding of the human factors in aviation, airline strategic management, and airport operational management as well as have the opportunity to undertake an internship course (aviation practicum).
If you are already employed in the aviation industry the BAvMan qualification also provides a route to improve your skills and knowledge to further your career in aviation.
Internship
Massey University offers an active internship programme for the Bachelor of Aviation Management. This 12-week programme enables you to combine your university study with work in an area of the aviation industry.

Postgraduate programmes
Master of Aviation
A Master of Aviation will give you the skills to work to a high level of academic achievement, work to deadlines under pressure and communicate your work effectively. All of these are essential skills to work at a senior level in the aviation industry, or to progress to a higher level of study such as a PhD.
A masters is a rigorous and challenging academic programme, but you will be rewarded with an in-depth knowledge of aviation that will significantly enhance your career prospects in the internationally-competitive aviation sector.
Choose from two pathways: research or professional practice.
- Research pathway
If you choose this pathway your study will include 60 credits of taught courses including a compulsory Research Methods course. Part Two will incorporate a minimum of 60 credits of research. - Professional practice pathway
Those wanting a more practice-based qualification which reflects their industry experience should enrol in the Professional Practice option.This option includes two compulsory aviation management courses, elective aviation courses and culminates in a 60 credit ‘Professional Practice in Aviation’ course. Students who are already aviation professionals may wish to draw on their current aviation role for the purpose of a case study.
Postgraduate Diploma in Business
The Postgraduate Diploma in Business (PGDipBus) provides you with an advanced education in specialist business areas. It consists of taught courses, though you may include a project in an area of interest. It is suited to those who have a degree (not necessarily in business) and would like to study business at a postgraduate level.
