Popular Programs
This course introduces relevant aspects of chemistry, physiology and dermatology as well as the regulatory marketing and business framework for cosmetics. You’ll also be introduced to the principles of formulation, with an emphasis on those related to cosmetics.
During the second year, you will undertake a more in-depth exploration of formulation, dermatology and professional practice in the cosmetic industry. This will include the importance of colour in these formulations and the differences between industrial and lab scale manufacture.
The final year culminates in a science-led project that can be tailored to your interests. Through the project you will demonstrate your capacity to address a particular issue in a rigorous, research-enabled way. The project can be linked to your placement or other work experience, making it a useful way of catching the attention of potential employers.

As a Cosmetic Science graduate, you’ll have a wide range of employment options in the cosmetic and related pharmaceutical industries.
Cosmetic scientists can earn starting salaries of around £20,000, moving up to over £50,000 a year for senior chemist and R&D managerial roles. You could also explore positions in business, sales and marketing. With the sector thriving in the UK, cosmetic science is a great area to qualify in for those that want creative and diverse career options in science.
This course will equip you with the skills needed to work in the cosmetics, personal care and fragrance industries in the UK and globally, including formulation, quality control, safety and claims substantiation testing, regulatory framework, and business skills.
You will be taught by a wide range of academic staff and selected external experts, allowing you to gain skills and knowledge in a thematically coherent manner via lectures, teamwork, group presentations, new product development exercises, dermatology, and working in skin and hair technology labs.

Course structure
We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, group tasks, problem-based learning (PBL) and lab experiments.
Assessment methods include written PBL group presentations, written examinations (both open and closed book), lab reports and a lab-based creative project. You will take four 30-credit modules in Stages 1 and 2, and a 60-credit Research Project in Stage 3.
Our highly-regarded Pharmacy course begins with a broad overview of the fundamental pharmaceutical and biological sciences. You will develop more specialised knowledge and skills in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, therapeutics, clinical management and patient-focused clinical skills.
The course lasts four years and you will graduate as a Master of Pharmacy. The MPharm is the only undergraduate qualification in the UK which leads to professional registration as a pharmacist.

Course structure
Lectures cover key principles and are delivered by experienced and research active academics in the field. You will also learn in small seminar groups, practical laboratory classes and dispensing classes.
Assessment methods include examinations, time constrained tests (some web-based), assignments, essays, reports and presentations.
The course puts you at the forefront of recent trends in pharmaceutical research, in which increasing numbers of drugs are coming from large biopharmaceutical molecules.

Course structure

This course shares a common first year with BSc (Hons) Biopharmaceutical Science and BSc (Hons) Medicinal Chemistry, which allows you to easily change course at the end of the first year should one of these routes appeal to you.

This course will equip you with the skills you need to be an accomplished Automotive Engineer. In your first year you’ll develop an excellent foundation in engineering, and then from the second year you will specialise in vehicle systems.
We host the Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP) which has allowed us to forge excellent links with many local industrial companies including the Nissan plant and its supply chain, among others.

The course will cover a range of topics at the cutting edge of the discipline using the latest digital tools. Topics will cover core aspects of Electronic Engineering along with their application in design and manufacturing. The content on the BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management course reflects our close links with employers, and our teaching emphasises the connections between theories and practice.
A distinctive feature of this course is the core module ‘Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions’, which gives you a fundamental understanding of theories relevant to successful international tourism management.
Field trips are an integral part of the course, and previous destinations have included New York, Paris, Barcelona and Prague. You’ll also go on field trips to places within the UK, and we regularly invite industry speakers to come to us in Sunderland.

This Masters course takes a social science approach to tourism and hospitality and combines it with practical skills for the workplace.
